The main road 6 Lappeenranta-Imatra project is divided into two phases. The first phase will be opened for traffic in November 2010.
In the first phase
- A 23-kilometre stretch of main road 6 will be upgraded
- 2.5 kilometres of new road alignment will be built on main road 13
- Four new graded interchanges will be built: Portti, Selkäharju, Lavola and Muukko
- Four graded interchanges will be upgraded: Mattila, Viipurintie, Lauritsala and Mälkiä
- Two 318-metre bridges will be built across the Saimaa Canal and the old canal
- 42 other bridges will be built or upgraded
- Two level crossings will be demolished: Yllikkälä and Ilottul
The first phase of construction will be carried out during 2009-2011. This phase will consist of upgrading the road between Ahvenlampi and Mansikkala.
In the second phase
- A 20-kilometre stretch of main road 6 will be upgraded
- Two new graded interchanges will be built: Jänhiälä and Pellisenranta
- Five graded interchanges will be upgraded: Ahvenlampi, Joutseno, Saimaantie, Vesivalo and Korvenkanta
- Altogether, 17 bridges will be built or renovated.
After the finishing touches, the first phase will be completed in 2012 and the second phase in 2013.
