Upgrading main road 6 will bring socially-significant benefits to traffic, business life as well as the environment. A smooth and safe road for travel and transport Main road 6 has been unsafe and congested from time to time. On main road 6, the number of fatal traffic accidents is more than three times the average number on Finnish main roads. Widening main road 6 into a four-lane road will ensure a higher level of traffic safety: The median barrier will prevent practically all head-on collision accidents, while the graded interchanges will decrease the number of accidents at crossings. Game fences will protect the traffic from animal collisions, and improved road lighting will enhance safety, particularly in bad weather conditions. The safety of pedestrian and bicycle traffic will improve, as a passage network separate from the main road will be constructed to cover the entire route, and underpasses as well as pedestrian crossings will be available for crossing main road 6. On a four-lane road, slower vehicles cause hardly any hindrance to other traffic. Travelling times will be cut and will be more reliable, as the flow of traffic becomes smoother. Travel time between Lappeenranta and Imatra is estimated to be cut by 5 to 6 minutes when travelling by car and 3 to 4 minutes for heavy goods vehicles. The traffic flow on the nearby street network will also be made smoother, as part of the flow will be shifted to main road 6. |

For business life
Heavy goods transport on main road 6 between Lappeenranta and Imatra accounts for as much as one fifth of the total traffic. Upgrading the road will guarantee a congestion-free, smooth connection, improving the accuracy and cost-efficiency of transport operations.
Improvements to the road and its smoother flow between Lappeenranta and Imatra will increase industrial expansion possibilities.
For cities and land use planning
Upgrading main road 6 will enhance the possibilities of the cities and the province of South Karelia to promote business and employment by land use and planning. The road will enable the planning of new and the implementation of existing land use plans for residential, industrial and business areas. New work and business areas that are easy to reach are being created in the vicinity of the new graded interchanges. Additionally, the possibilities to develop tourism and recreational areas are improved.
