Mälkiä canal bridge

Two bridges of more than 318 metres in length will be built across the Saimaa Canal and the old canal. The bridge will be the most impressive detail of the whole project. The current bridge as well as the embankment between the canals will be demolished, which will enable the restoration and reopening of the old canal.

The cover of the bridge was casted in August 2008 and it was opened for traffic in November 2008. In the spring 2009 the old bridge was demolished and the building of the other new bridge commenced. The second bridge will open for traffic in autumn 2010.

Ramps from main road 6 to the east of the Saimaa Canal have been planned for serving tourism in the canal area. There will be no connections from the surrounding residential areas to the interchange. The detailed planning of these so-called tourist intersections is under way. The project will be implemented as a joint venture between the City of Lappeenranta and the Finnish Transport Agency.
