FAQ

What will be done to main road 6?

Main road 6 will be upgraded to a four-lane road between Lappeenranta and Imatra, thus turning it into a so-called mixed traffic road. All intersections will be transformed into graded interchanges, while the travel directions will be separated with either a median barrier or a central reservation.

Who is developing main road 6?

The developer of the project is the Finnish Transport Agency.

Who is responsible for construction?

The mainroad 6 project is divided into two phases. The first phase in Lappeenranta is being constructed by Joint Venture TYL VT6. The second phase is being constructed by Destia Oy.

How was the contractor for the project chosen?

The contractors pf both phases were chosen through a competitive bidding process, in which both price and quality matters were deciding factors.

How much will the project cost?

Theestimated cost of the whole project is 177 million euros + value added tax. The costs of the construction will be coveredby government budget funds.

Schedule

How long will construction take?

It will take about four years to complete the whole project. Construction began at the end of 2007, and the road is expected to beopen for traffic at the end of 2011. The project website will be updated with the latest information.

When will the project be completed?

The first section is expected to be open for traffic in November 2010 and the second section in 2011. After the finishing touches, the first phase will be completed in 2012 and the second in 2013.

Disadvantagesposed by the project

How willthe project affect travelling on main road 6?

Traffic disruptions are being minimised by careful planning and scheduling. The new roadway will be built first in order to make it available for traffic. As aground rule, there will be two lanes available for traffic throughout the construction process and speed limits will be 50 kilometres per hour at the lowest. However, traffic will occasionally be rerouted and there will be short stretches with a 30 km/hour speed limit, as well as short traffic stops due to blasting, for example.

How canI contribute to the smooth flow of traffic during the construction phase?

Make sure you allow enough time for travelling and prepare for sudden changes, even if you travel the route on a daily basis. The road alignments and markings, as well as the speed limits, are subject to constant changes. Speed limits will beset to ensure the safety of everyone using the road as well as that of the construction workers. Therefore, it is extremely important that everyone obeys the speed limits.

Where can I obtain information concerning traffic arrangements?

All notifications concerning traffic arrangements will be published on the homepage of the current project web site under “Now constructing on main road 6”. Remember to keep an eye on that section of the web site. Notifications concerning traffic arrangements will also be communicated via the media and sent directly to residents.

Benefitsof the project

What arethe benefits from improving main road 6?

Main road 6 has been unsafe and congested for a long time. The new four-lane road will enhance the flow of traffic and improve traffic safety considerably. Simultaneously, groundwater protection and noise protection near residential areas will be improved. Thus, the project is also beneficial in terms of the environment.

How willmotorists benefit from the project?

Traffic flow will be improved on main roads 6 and 13. Travel times will become more reliable and shorter, particularly during rush hour. Traffic safety will be improved considerably: The median barriers and central reservations will almost entirely eliminate head-on collisions. The graded interchanges will also improve traffic safety.

How willbicycle and pedestrian traffic benefit?

While mainroad 6 is being broadened and improved, bicycle and pedestrian ways will alsobe constructed. A separate bicycle and pedestrian way network will be built along the whole stretch between Lappeenranta and Imatra. Bicycle and pedestrian traffic safety will improve, as the passages will cross main road 6 on pedestrian bridges and through underpasses.

How will the residents of the area benefit?

Improving main road 6 will redirect traffic away from the street network, particularly in the western residential areas of Lappeenranta. Thus, the living environment in these areas will become safer and more pleasant. Noise protection on main road 6 willbe improved, thus mitigating the number of people living in noise-affected areas, even though traffic flow will increase.

How will the cities and businesses in the area benefit from the project?

The project will bring with it new work and business areas to the vicinity of the mainroad, and these areas will be easy to access. The project will enhance the towns’ land use planning possibilities as well as the implementation of existing plans.

Industry and other businesses in the area will benefit from the smoother flow of transport. More reliable travelling times will enable cost-efficiency.

How can I submit queries or give feedback?

You will find a link to the contact details of the parties responsible for the realisation of the project at the top of the current web site’s homepage. You will also find a feedback form, which you can use to submit queries orcomments.
