Main road 6 runs through a ridge landscape between Lappeenranta and Imatra, the area being for the most part groundwater supply areas. Thus far there has been no groundwater protection along the main road, and the water from the road has run into the surrounding terrain.
The main road 6 project will significantly improve the level of groundwater protection. Altogether, 10 kilometres of groundwater protection will be built as part of the project, thus providing protection for all the important groundwater areas.
Groundwater protection will prevent the salty water runoff from the surface of the road from trickling into the groundwater. The protection measures will furthermore slow down or prevent hazardous substances from mixing with the groundwater in cases where there is an accident in the area involving the transport of hazardous substances. The protection will be built in such a way that the leachate off the road will be directed outside the groundwater supply areas.
The first phase of the main road 6 project consists of the building of about four kilometres of groundwater protection by the airport and in the Muukko area.
Pikkala Spring
The Pikkala Spring, located near the Lauritsala graded interchange, is one of the most valuable nature sites in the area of the main road 6 project. The spring is a historical health spring which was discovered in 1802. Upgrading main road 6 will not affect the Pikkala Spring, as a broad tree zone will remain between the spring and the main road. Furthermore, the main road 6 project will not have any impact on the surface water currents, such as rivers and lakes.
