The Salpa Line and the ponds in the Rutola Isthmus

The historically important Salpa Line of the Finnish Defence Forces and the Rutola Bunker are located on the planned new Mikkelintie road (main road 13) alignment. The location is the beautiful isthmus between the Kärjenlampi Pond and the Myllylampi Pond. Around the same area, there is also an old channel used for floating timber from one pond to the other.

Preserving these sites has been taken into account in planning the road and, for example, in constructing the bridges. The historical constructions will be photographed and measured during construction, in case they have to be moved. If they do need to be moved, they will be returned to the way they were after the construction work is finished.

Canal constructions

A double bridge of more than 318 metres in length will be built across the Saimaa Canal. The current bridge and the high embankment between the canals will be demolished. These solutions will enable the Finnish Maritime Administration to restore and reopen the old channel of the Saimaa Canal. The pilot station by the canal is protected by the National Board of Antiquities and Historical Monuments, and it will be done justice next to the observation platform to be constructed.
